New Jen's Horde

I'm an idiot.

Today, during a field trip to the Butterfly Pavilion, I bought a pair of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches for the kids.

At the time it seemed kind of fun and cool, but on the way home it hit me. I paid money for roaches. People pay money to get RID of roaches. What was I thinking?

I'm sure it will turn out to be fine, and a great thing for the kids. The man at the gift shop assures me they are both female, so as long as he knows what he's talking about and they weren't knocked up when I got them we should be OK. (Please Lord.) Oh, and I guess as long as they didn't use any amphibian DNA while they were producing them, because as we all know life, uh, finds a way...

OKay...uh...that's just sick. (Shuddering)
Silly, silly, Jen. Do the kids like them? Just make sure they don't get loose....
That's funny. Hopefully they will become fun learning tools. Great post.

Thanks for commenting earlier.
Jen, isn't that a regular eating challenge on Fear Factor? If you get desperate, you could just fry them up :)
Mmmm, Dawn, then they'd be hissing AND sizzling. Tasty!

Davin carefully read the care sheet that came with them last night (the kids had to call him from the gift shop and make a plan that these things would NOT be my problem) and it says that because of our climate if they got loose they would just die here. So, that's a comfort. I know cockroaches are pretty tough, but I choose to believe the handout, so don't tell me anything different! LA LA LA I DON'T HEAR YOU!!!!!
Jen, your butterfly murdering kitties would take care of any escapees. Sleep easy and well away from the hissing!

Good point, Renee!
Sorry that's gross and foul. But if I was a kid, I'd be stoked...just make sure you wear shoes in the house because you don't want roach guts on your toes.
Thanks for the advice, Audra, I hadn't thought of that. I'm going to go get my shoes right now...
