Thursday Thirteen
1. I know I normally talk about knitting, but today I want to talk about crocheting, which I have actually done a whole lot more of in my life. 2. Do you know how to crochet? If not there are several tutorial pages on the internet, as well as classes offered at local craft stores. 3. If you live near Denver, email me and I will teach you. 4. If you want to take advantage of #3, you have to be serious about learning to crochet, and not a serial axe-murdering rapist or something. I have enough issues already, thank you. 5. I especially want to talk about Granny Squares today. 6. Granny squares are easy to make. Here's a step-by-step tutorial from Crochet Cabana. I really recommend her site, she has a TON of great information and patterns for folks interested in crochet. 7. One of the things I really love about granny squares, is that they are quick and easy to make, they look good in just about any yarn, so you can use up leftovers, and there are many, many people who accept them and join them to make afghans to donate to various charities and groups. 8. I recently sent a box of squares off to Love Afghans for Pine Ridge Reservation. This group assembles the afghans, and sends them up to Pine Ridge, where many people live in substandard conditions, and a blanket can make a big difference. 9. You might also be interested in Squares for Survivors, a group that is turning donated 12" grannies into afghans for the folks who survived Hurricane Katrina. 10. If neither of those grab you, Bev has a huge list of folks accepting grannies for all different sorts of places, nursing homes, babies, the homeless, etc. She has about a billion other patterns and ideas for places to donate on her site, too, for all kinds of home made items not just crochet. 11. If you're ready to make fancier squares, Stargazer has links to 6", 7", 8", and 12" squares at her site. She really more crochet patterns in one place than any other site I've seen, so if you're looking to make anything, you might want to start at her Crochet and Craft Links. 12. So, if you have the inclination, and an hour or so, why not make a square and send it off to someone? It's not a lot of work, and somewhere down the line it will definitely make a difference in someone's life. Remember, many of these places will take knit squares as well! 13. Happy Hooking! Links to other Thursday Thirteens! I'm using the FABULOUS Mr. Linky again! If you're playing the 13, please link yourself up and leave me a comment. Don't skip the comment part, though, because I get all twitchy when people do that. |
The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

way cool list, I know how to make a straight line but I can't turn a corner. LOL You probably know how to french braid too....... You're my new hero!
Thank you! I used to know how to make granny squares (like 25 years ago) but I forgot. This is just what I needed. Someday you can teach me to knit.
Hey, I used to crochet and now you are giving me ideas, thanks!!! I will check out those links! your blog is featured on the main TT site, congrats :) Mine is up too!
We did crocheted bandages for humanitarian aid. It continues to be a great project. And they are so needed.
I want to make granny squares. Thanks so much the links.
I have started my first socks, I bet granny squares are easier!

I never knew you could send granny squares off to charities! I love crocheting and knitting! Sounds like something I could do when I get some free time in the summer.
I (barely) know how to crochet. I have done granny squares. You are right about Pine Ridge Reservation...that is some REAL need. I'm a sponsor through The Box Project (http://www.boxproject.org) for a family- I was matched with a Mississippi family, but I hear how awful the conditions and needs are from other sponsors with match families in Pine Ridge Rez. It's so sad.
thanks for dropping by - I tried to crochet, but I am terrible at it. My loops (or whatever you call them) are either way too tight or way too loose so therefor, my subject always turns out very abstract. My mom can crochet an entire LARGE poncho in an evening.
crap - I got distracted and didn't answer your questions - yes, all of the work on my posts is mine...I created it.
softball caused the red giant thing on my knee - it did not feel fun.

I have not held yarn nor crochet needle in many moons. I might did out the stuff though. Thanks for the reminder.

I just learned how to knit and I've always wanted to learn how to crochet! I love Denver too (side note);-)
Ok you have piqued my curiousity...might make a good project next year for handwork during homeschooling.
My T13 is up.
My T13 is up.
Cool! I learned to knit but don't remember any more. My mom and sister crochet but I've never learned.
I've been wanting to try knitting or crocheting again, since I'm pretty crafty. I tried to master these MANY years ago (as a teen,) but I was horrible at it!
Thank you for sharing. I haven't knitted or crocheted in years! Maybe after I move to Texas I might have more time to do things like that again. :)
I'm shocked......I did not know you were a hooker!!!!!
My grandmother tried to teach me to crochet but she was right handed and I am left handed and she just couldn't make me get the hang of it. Maybe I'll try again.
My list is up too.

I haven't crocheted in years! Now you have made me want to try it again!! I'll check out those websites, I really would like to make some granny squares!! :)
Thanks for a great TT! Mine is up!

Never crocheted before! I don't think I'll start now. I always wished I could make my own clothes. My sister got all that talent.
I need to learn how to crochet! I used to know enough to do a chain stitch but it's been ages. I'll have to put that on my to-do list...lol!
I just wanted to let you know that I mentioned you in my TT today. :) In a good way of course, Happy Thursday!
I'm still working on that knitting that I started. I should really learn a different kind of knitting because what you showed me is going really slow. And I still can't knit and watch TV or knit in the car either...makes me sick.
Thanks for dropping by. Glad you enjoyed my pets. I checked in with Leanne, I think I'm still kosher.

Oh I love crotching granny squares...they are so easy. And I now my local craft stores accept 12x12" donations, so I would love to help out!
I do attempt to crochet... I have needles, yarn, and about a dozen unfinished projects. My latest one was a scarf I started last November. I'm not very fast, and I do tend to lose stitches. But I try! I'll have to check out those grannie square links. Sounds like a project about my size. :)
We were at Ben Franklin lastnight, and I thought of you. I saw stacks and stacks of how-to's and I was so tempted to pick something up and learn to knit - like I need another addicting habit! Stop that! Stop making it so dang enticing, would you?!! :P~~
