Thursday Thirteen

Comments:
I've never taken a Latin course, but I've always been curious because so much of the scientific world derives from the Latin language. Back during high school I went to camp with girls from around the world, including several Spanish-speaking campers. I learned more in that month than I did in 3 years of Spanish class.

I am fluent in some languages (still trying my best in English, not my mother tongue) but I don't know any Latin...so I have no idea what your last sentence means, except for the word "nemo", don't I know a little troubled fish with that name????
Happy TT!

My mother sooo wanted me to study Latin. She was certain I would master english with an understanding of the root of our language. So now I struggle, cursed by her voice in my head "told you so"

I did Latin for two years and LOVED it! Unfortunately, we never got to the stage of translating the classics, but I learned enough to bitch with my classmates about other people without them understanding a word! He he!

Of course, I have since become a much better person...

LMAO. To boldy go where no man has gone before..isn't that just like cube...ha-ha
Ad praesens ova cras pullis sunt meliora
Great thirteen...
My TT is up

i took some spanish and german but did always want to take latin too. you are right about instantly learning to order food in a foreign country.

I took it in high school, don't remember much now but did like translating the stories.
Mine is up.

I took Spanish. I'm still not very good at it. 2 years in H.S. and 2 semesters in College.

I had over 100 pen pals from all over the world from the time I was 14 until I was done with college. I learned how to write/recognize many different words from many different languages but I bet I would butcher how to say them!

LOL

latin makes my brain hurt. :)

Lex clavatoris designati rescindenda est.

That is just too cool! I didn't take any language in high school (wasn't required) but I did take 2 or 3 years of Spanish in college. I learned more Spanish working with El Salvadorean immigrants in the kitchen of a restaurant than I did in school, although I can slog along now as long as we don't have to use the past tense. There is no past for me, in Spanish.

BTW, my TT is up too.

I just can't keep my geeknicity quiet.

Ah, I did that with Spanish, 5 days a week. What fun!

Mei improbus Latin dictus.
Thanks for visiting FBO and my T13 - Bible Misquotes Edition.

I have never taken latin, but I have heard its a pretty easy language to learn. Maybe because there are only a few people in the class. :-) Good for you for learning all of those languages. Spanish is as far as I go, and its more like spanglish. Thanks for sharing.

I once got The Cat In the Hat in Latin. Interesting, but the kid didn't like it much.

Awesome. I learned Latin mostly by singing, but I'd like to have some formal instruction to get, you know, like, the grammar right. :)

#1 Son starts Latin this year (6th grade), probably not 5 days a week. I've done that schedule with Chinese and Russian, though. What a blast!

Wow - cool list. I still need to work on learning my second language..... =)

What amazes me is how many words come from Latin bases. I've never had to order a ham sandwich in Latin....good point. My TT is up.

Are you SURE It was 1990?? That fall was my freshman year and it wasn't listed ANYWHERE in the catalogs!! I had to take French...same thing...5 credit hours, 5 days a week...I took 13 credit hours total. And dangit if I'm not completely rusty!! I really want to learn Latin.

No, I'm not sure. That's why I said it was around 1990 or so... I'm sure if I sit down and think about it I could pin it down more.

I only did one semester at CU, it was a fall one, and I went back up to UNC where it was smaller and cheaper!

You're multi-lingual! I can barely speak English sometimes!

My 13 are leaving a lipstick stain on the coffee mug.

that is a lot of latin!
my tt is up too.

Latin would be very useful. I wish I had taken it in high school, but I took French.

The only language class I have ever taken was Russian. I had gone back to school when the kids were little and it was just something I wanted to do. Loved that class and had a great professor!

Plus that, learning latin helps you understand more word meanings in our language, doesn't it???

My TT is up here. Hope you'll drop by!!

we actually had latin in high school, but i opted for german so i never learned it but my friends who did LOVED it! I wish I would have done that!

Languages are not my strong point but I wish it was. I have great admiration for those who can speak many languages. I would think that Latin would be most useful to those in the law profession. Good for you for learning some of it and actually enjoying it!

hi!nice list!have anice weekend

Sounds like a fun and interesting class. I barely made it through my two years of German. I couldn't even imagine attempting Latin.

Wow. I wish I could speak some foreign language. I took French in school but a bad experience as a Freshman forced me to study Latin for the remainder of my High School years. But it was an Advanced Placement class. When you talked about Hercules I thought "Sounds like Fabulae Facules". I did well in class and aced the AP exam but didn't take latin in college so the credits were wasted. All I remember now is "Arma virumque cano" Oh well.
And thanks for stoppping by my blog.

I took Latin my Sr year of HS. Our teacher was a cooke...flake...wacko! Certifiable!

I don't think I learned much of anything in that class...and I got an A. Since Latin had not been offered at our HS long enough we couldn't have a Latin Honor Society (all the other languages at school had one) so she made up the Latin Nasty Horror Society (she's a Monty Python fan) and while this was mostly for the second year Latin kids, I got to be in it because she liked me and I was a Sr who couldn't take it for another year.

Lutest est Lutest...not sure if that's how you spell it or not.
