It's True!

My car does indeed need a new transmission. Davin went down to the shop today and talked to the mechanic for about an hour. He said the guy was really cool, and explained the whole process to him, including exactly how a transmission works and how our recent one likely failed. Davin had a great time, so I've got to give the guy credit, Davin so rarely gets to do "guy stuff."

I'm trying to take advantage of the time by cleaning and catching up on the kids' school. Not that we really need to catch up, but we've got a TON of materials about the American Revolution from the library and we'll probably get a chance to go through it.

We'll get the car back a week from today, so I bet we'll be all educated up and super clean by then! I'm reading a few books on my own right now. I always seem to have more than one going, but some of these I'm trying to really blaze through because, although I requested them all at different times, they came in all at once. Here they are: Dead Reckoning: The New Science of Catching Killers, by Michael Baden M.D and Marion Roach, Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed by Robert Graysmith, The Stand: Expanded Edition: For the First Time Complete and Uncut by Stephen King (again, I seem to have to drag this one out every 1-2 years and read it, I can't help it), Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert (also again, I love this series! Tiernan almost ended up with a name like Duncan Idaho...) and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (this one I read back in the early '90s, and now I'm hosting a book discussion of it for the parents in my homeschool group.) And, I'm still working my way through the Book of Mormon, a chapter or two most days. :-) I've always read tons of stuff at the same time, no wonder I'm usually going in 40 different directions!

If you get a minute today, will you stop by Renee's blog? Her mom is sick, and she needs prayers and good thoughts!

Hey there Jen!
All I can say is... SNAP!
Although I have just gotten my car back from the mechanic (not for a new transmission, but close enough) I had to have the clutch, mater and slave cylinders all replaced!!
These cars are terrible aren't they...
Our news, as of last night, is somewhat good and a visit back to the IVF clinic on Thursday and starting of the injections... So hopefully, in a couple of weeks we might have some good news...
Good luck with the cleaning (I am sure you have a very clean house after this) and reading.
Cheers for now
Bernie

Thanks for sending folks my way Jen. Mom is doing better, but still in ICU...thank God that my stepdad asked for that lung specialist...truely a gift!

So now you know the secret of the minivan's transmission and can avoid future problems? Or is this just one of those things that you have to do? I hope it's something that you can avoid. I know I really hate being stuck without my car...I would have rented one last time if they had any available at our car rental place...but it figures that it's on car mechanic road and all cars were rented to others with their cars in the shop.

clean and educated kids...sounds nice.

I'm sure that your librarians are looking at you funny. Mine do when I get on a kick like that. I had a judge friend who taught a class at a local college on serial killers. She liked to end the class with some grisly story then say, "Have a good night..." with a psychotic look on her face (it was an evening class). You couldn't pay me to take that class. I'd never be able to leave the building.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your transmission. Those suckers are expensive.

Is it a Dodge? We've had two Dodges and both needed new transmissions. I still really liked them overall though. But if I ever buy another Dodge minivan, it will be with the understanding that we'll need a new transmission down the line.

Have fun reading!

Wow. We have similar reading habits. I have read all of those books ...except for the Book of Mormom, that is.

Oh, and I haven't read the expanded edition of The Stand. I'm curious about what King could possibly add to it... except a less literal deus ex machina ending.

Anyway, I'm sorry about your car, but cleaning and reading will pass the time nicely, except for the cleaning ;-)
