Peter Jackson to produce 'The Hobbit'

Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Yay!!!!!!! That's all I have to say about that...

Yesterday, Cube posted a video on her blog that made me cry, especially in light of what Jared's doing right now, but also I believe it is an important message in general. So, I'm going to repost it here, with a hat tip to Cube.

  is reporting to Parris Island today for boot camp. He will be a Marine, like my dad.

We won't know until near the end of his training what he will be doing, or whether he will go straight off to Iraq or Afghanistan. Since he's my brother, I obviously want him out of harm's way! But, he's a tough, smart kid, and I think he'll do well where ever he ends up.

I am very proud of him, and I can't wait to see photos! When I do, I'll share them.

  Yes, a grand 231 years today!

I can't share my favorite Marine with you, my dad, because he doesn't keep a blog or anything. (Hi, Dad! I love you!) So I will share my distant second favorite with you. Here's a soundboard of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, from Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. Completely inappropriate language here, but I can't help but get the giggles every time I hear it.

Joe Rosenthal, who took this iconic photo in 1945, died Sunday.

This photo is close to my heart, mostly because of my father. He recently retired after 32 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in Viet Nam and Desert Storm, and of course, various peacetime postings. When I was in high school, he spent a great deal of time stationed at the base at Quantico, VA, where every time we entered or left through the main gate we saw their monument to the Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima.



Not long ago, I was surprised to find out that one of men in the picture was the same Ira Hayes, made famous in the Johnny Cash song. Well, made famous to those of us who had fathers who were into Johnny Cash, which just brings it all back to my dad again. You may remember my recent post about how me and Johnny go way back, well, now you know why! About Ira Hayes, apparently he did suffer an ignominious, drunken end much like in the song, but you can check here to read more about him, he's got an interesting story.

So, I just wanted to take this chance to say, "Love you Dad!" You make us all proud!
