Pharmaceutical Thoughts/Life Changes

Remember when you were in college and you took acid with your friends, and you would write down all the stuff you said because it just seemed so BRILLIANT at the time? Of course, then you had to deal with a house full of sticky notes the next day that purported to explain the functionings of time, or wondering if that stuff you saw was always there and the dose just gave you the power to see it? Yeah, brilliant, ahem...

Well, it's been a long, long time since those days, which is good. I feel like I have such a tenuous hold on my brainpower as it is since bearing children, that it's just not worth risking coming completely untethered for the sake of this form of temporary, fake enlightenment. Gotta admit, those were fun days, though!

No reason for bringing that up, except that I have a migraine and the meds are trying to work. I love my meds. I love my doctors. The world is a better place for me because of them. It does sort of weird me out though, that I'm still pumping drugs into my body to mess with my head after 20 years, the only difference being that they're just not as entertaining. Could this be what it means to grow up? To be old?

Ooh, it just occurred to me that, since the early 90s, I went from LSD to LDS. Hmmm. If I could get in a time machine now and go back and talk to myself then, I don't think the then me would believe it. Then me would be all like, "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K." And I'm pretty sure the rest of the message would be lost. Glad to be where I am, but still not sure how I got here...

Monday, Monday,

can't trust that day. Unless you were expecting it to be gray and sleepy, then it's pretty much on target.

Yesterday was fun. It was my birthday, w00t! I ended up subbing in Primary, with the 5 year olds. I told them it was my birthday, and asked them old how they thought I was turning. One kid had a look of awe on his face and said, "Twenty?" as if that was the biggest number he could think of. I said, "Aren't you sweet? I'm 38."

Seven little mouths dropped open. It was the only time the room was silent all day!

President Gordon B. Hinckley Passed Today

President Hinckley

Beloved Church President, Gordon B. Hinckley, Dies at 97

President Gordon B. Hinckley, who led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through twelve years of global expansion, has died at the age of 97.
I am new to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as you all know, so he is the only President and Prophet that I have any experience with. I didn't know him personally, but from what I've seen of him I've been very impressed with his sweet spirit and compassion. And his quick wit. I was surprised by how funny he was!

I am happy for him, because he is with his wife now, and I know he's been waiting. But, I'm sad for the rest of us, as we have lost a truly unique, effective, and touching leader.

Big plans this weekend?

We don't have anything major going on, a birthday party and church on Sunday. It will be nice to be at church, we weren't able to attend during our trip.

Anya and Tiernan have birthday parties coming up, too. At least they will have them coming up when I get them planned!

We're going to meet friends at McD tonight. If you see us, say howdy! Yeah, we're pretty fancy around here.

I read an interesting book. It was about the cholera outbreak in London in the 1850s and it's effects on how we handle public health issues and how cities are planned. I know that sounds dry, but it was really kind of a page turner! If you'd like to read it, it was called, The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World.

Have you read anything worth recommending lately?

Sorry this is kind of blah, I'm having a fibro day. I played volleyball with some folks at church last night, and I haven't done that in probably 20 years. So, I'm in extra pain on top of the usual stuff. I had a lot of fun, though! I had forgotten how cool it is when you see the ball coming, and you just know you're going to get it, and you smack it right back over the net. Not that I was doing that a lot! I'm not a real sport-o by any means. I think I'll go back, though, I'm sure to do better than I did last night.

Have a great weekend!

Moving On

This will be my last post from Iowa, tomorrow we're leaving for Ohio. If you see us passing through, say howdy!

Today we drove on a HUGE bridge across the Mississipi into Nauvoo, Illinois. It's a really neat place, with some pretty important history for the LDS church. We saw the temple, and some of the residences, but we didn't have time to really poke around. We'll have to come back when we have a whole day to check it all out.

The camper is still doing well. It's been raining for a full 24 hours almost now, and we're dry inside! I am loving this whole pop up situation!

How are you all doing? Hopefully I'll be able to check in tomorrow or the next day!

I'm back!

Thanks for your patience, I had an overwhelming week and just couldn't deal with the blog on top of it!

The most important things we did last week were:

1) Davin and I were baptized and confirmed in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We'd been taking lessons with the missionaries for a few months, including talking to the LDS folks in our homeschool group, and really felt led to do this. We're very happy with our new church family and the changes in our lives.

2) We celebrated Tiernan's 5th Birthday. I've never had a baby turn 5 before! I've always had another kid before that could happen. It's pretty cool to be totally without the diaper bag and everything, though, so I think I can hang with this situation.

Did you guys see this?

U.S. casino magnate gives Picasso's dream the elbow

Wynn had just finalized a $139 million sale to another collector of his painting, called "Le Reve" (The Dream), when he poked a finger-sized hole in the artwork while showing it to friends at his Las Vegas office a couple of weeks ago.
Ugh. That just gave me a horrible sinking feeling, I think because it's very much something that would happen to me. I'm a complete klutz, and it only gets worse the more valuable something is! Luckily the children all fall under the "priceless" loophole and I've never dropped anyone, but anything of monetary value isn't safe around me...

Well, I'm off to check up on all my blog friends, and get ready for Anya's birthday this weekend (she's turning 11, where is the time going?)
