Campin'
We're leaving tomorrow morning to do some camping, we'll be back home in 9 days. Hopefully, I'll get to blog a little from the road, we should have wi-fi available in at least some of our stops...
We figured we'll be going through 5 states, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. This will be much less driving than our 2007 trip, that really was something. (We went through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Kansas, if I haven't forgotten anything.)
So, check here, and I hope I'll have posts for you.

Updates all around...
I'm back home now! I rolled in on the train Monday morning, and pretty much slept through yesterday.
The train between here and Iowa runs overnight, so I didn't really get to see any scenery. But, I did see one notable thing while I was riding. There was an older guy in my car, who was on oxygen. He was wearing high-waisted pants with rainbow suspenders. And, here's the good part, a T-shirt that said, "Drink Til You Want Me." Love it! I wish I could have taken a photo!
My sister's surgery went well, and she's starting to feel better. She's still got a hard row to hoe, so if you could keep her in your prayers that would be great!
I still need to schedule Sage's surgery. She's stressed out about it, so I think it would be best to just get it over with.
Kaywinnet, the dog, is doing pretty well after her major abdominal surgery. She's still in a cone, and on 4 different medications, but she should be OK.
I'm having a really crummy fibro flare. It feels like there is gravel in my shoulders and hips. But, I'm not gonna complain because it will go away and life is good :-)

What a day!
Sorry I haven't blogged in a little bit, I ran out of town last week on the train (awesome way to travel!) and I've been in Iowa helping my sister through some bad stuff. Not the least of which was a surgery to remove her gall bladder yesterday.
The surgery went well, but they were having a hard time getting her pain under control afterward. She's on some pretty serious painkillers every day after a series of botched surgeries in the military, so the stuff they were giving her just wasn't helping. And they were insisting that nothing else could be done, and that Julie just needed to relax. I'm a big believer in relaxing and breathing and all that, but there's a point where that's just not going to help, and Julie was long past it.
I turned into the Nurse's Nightmare, and pretty soon they had a cocktail that knocked the pain down a little, and allowed her to sleep. Then I just needed to make sure they were getting them on board on time all day, but they were really good about that. I wasn't quite as bad as this scene, but I was ready to go here if needed. (That part of the movie always makes me cry.)
Then, in the midst of dealing with all this, we got word back from Sage's biopsy. Her growth was the kind of birthmark I'd suspected, and he recommends surgery. The good thing is that there's no cancer in it right now, thank God! So, I'm at the hospital dealing with two sets of surgeons all day...
To add to all that, Davin called to tell me that the reason the dog keeps throwing up is that there's something metal obstructing her intestines and she needs immediate...wait for it... yep, surgery! It turns out she'd eaten a jingle bell AND a magnet and not only was her intestine obstructed, it was perforated. They expect her to be OK, it looks like we caught it right in time.
So, I need to set a surgery on the calendar today for Sage, and go get Julie from the hospital. And, Davin's picking up Kaywinnet from the vet.
So, it's all good, but it's all overwhelming, too. I need a minute to have a nervous breakdown, then I'll get back on track!

102 degrees
All day today I felt fine, then the hammer hit around 9pm. Two of the kids are fine, 2 are sick. I'm not sure how/when we're going to get home, I can't see doing 800 miles like this.
But, up until now, we've been having fun. I wonder if you guys can figure out what we went to see yesterday? It's was nerd heaven for us in Riverside, Iowa. I'll post the pictures later, after you all get a chance to guess...

So far, so good.
No one here at my mom's has the flu. I took my sister on errands today, though, and she has a fever of 103 right now. Oh, and I may be leaving in a bit here to take her to the ER. It depends on if she can get her fever down or not.
I got a little more information on the pee/poop situation. Apparently, Liam has a little friend from school who consistently pees, etc, in inappropriate places. Julie had some reservations about this kid, but has found out more while researching this latest. So, it's good to know that, even though Liam came up with the idea to do this the other day, he didn't think it up himself. And the boys are both pretty mortified and have been really good since then. And, Liam can't be with this other boy any more.
We had a big talk with Tiernan about not doing what other kids are doing when you know it's wrong. Weird. I didn't think I'd have to give my homeschooled kids the "if so and so jumped of a bridge, would you?" talk.
Unless we have the plague here, we're planning to go into Cedar Rapids tomorrow.

Pee, poop and the flu
We're here in Iowa, and we had a great time at my Grandma's party. She's pretty neat, and a bunch of people showed up to wish her well. I think she was surprised so many people came, but I wasn't. She's always been surrounded by tons of folks!
The night we got into town, we went over to my sister Julie's house to help her decorate the cakes for the party. (They were beautiful, I'll post pictures when I get my camera hooked up.) While the grownups were busy, the 2 six year old boys, ie Tiernan and my nephew Liam, apparently had way too much time on their hands.
I can't believe this actually happened.
Apparently, they were off in Julie's craft room, and decided to pee on the floor. Both of them. All OVER the floor. I would not have thought two boys could produce so much urine! Then, Liam pooped in a drawer. Yes, right in a drawer. The story went through a few stages before we got the final version, and I guess the only reason Tiernan didn't poop too was not that he had a moral objection, but that he couldn't. He tried, but he was empty. Such a proud moment.
A couple of people have told me this is a boy thing, but I can't imagine that's so. It seems like we wouldn't have gotten to this point in our history, because the moms would have killed all the young Neanderthals for peeing on the floors of the caves...ESPECIALLY their sister's caves.
Then, we found out that my niece, Amelia, had to go to the ER this afternoon with a fever of 105. The official diagnosis is Influenza Type A, and she's been contagious while we've been hanging out with her. Hopefully we don't get it, or if we do it waits until we're home.
It just occurred to me. Maybe Julie made up the story about the flu, just to keep us from coming over and peeing on her floors anymore? Gosh, I hope not.

We're in Topeka
It's a lot like Denver. In fact, it's the only city-type place we've seen since we left home. There's a whole lot of nothing on I-70 in Eastern Colorado and Kansas.
Davin and the kids are at a restaurant. We all tried to go, but Kaywinnet was barking and barking. I was worried that she would (she's in a new place, and she doesn't seem to be feeling well) so I performed an experiment. I called Davin's cell from mine, and left mine on her kennel as we drove away, sort of like a high tech nursery monitor. I muted it so she wouldn't hear us and start carrying on, but carry on she did! Oh my goodness, I'm glad we didn't just leave and hope for the best, we probably would have been asked to leave!
Oh yeah, to tell you why that would be a horror, I should explain to you why we're in Topeka, which technically isn't really on the way to Iowa from my house... We got online last night and tried a few different sites to book a hotel for tonight. Between the dog and the four kids, we're pretty extreme, I guess. The only places we could find on our original route wanted over $200/night. Or, if they had rooms for cheaper, they wanted us to pay for 2 of them! So, we bagged that plan and took the southern route, which only adds 60 miles so it's not that big of a deal.
Anyway, that's why we really didn't want to get kicked out of here. We have about 6 hours of driving ahead of us, and we didn't want to have to do it all tonight. We should get to my mom's house tomorrow afternoon/evening, and then on to Great Grandma Wanda's party on Saturday. Woohoo!

McNichol's right eye socket was rebuilt, part of the tooth inserted and a lens inserted in a hole drilled in the tooth...

Gasping for air!
It's been a busy few days, and it's only going to get busier, but I wanted to pop in and say hi!
First of all, you should know that I trimmed Maya's bangs today. So, you can all sleep a little easier...
We're gearing up for a trip to Iowa. My grandma is turning 85, and mom's throwing her a big party. The party's not a surprise, but our attending is, so if you see Grandma, don't say anything! I'm really excited, she's a cool lady :-)
We leave Thursday morning, and we'll be gone until the 9th, but hopefully I will be able to check in from the road a few times. As always, feel free to break in and clean my house while we're gone! We won't be camping this time (brrrr!) but we are driving. So, if you think about us, we'd appreciate any prayers you're up for!
Anyway, it's late and I'm trying to get the laundry caught up so we can pack tomorrow, so I'd better run.

Thursday Thirteen (one day early!)

In case you don't normally follow my blog, you need to know that we just went on a road trip. We travelled all the way from Denver to Eastern Pennsylvania to visit family, and hit Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri and Kansas! We visited a ton of family, and went on field trips and ate way too much fast food. So, here are some photos from our trip, there's a lot more but I'll spare you! 1. This is Tiernan (on the left) and his cousin Liam, being silly.  2. This is my Grandma, and I just thought this was a neat picture of her. She's such a cool lady, and I'm glad I caught her laughing :-)  3. This is the horde in front of the Joseph and Hyrum Smith memorial in Nauvoo Iowa.  4. My sister Julie, and my mom. I don't think either of them would like this photo, but it's how they look when they're happy and I was glad to see how this turned out.  5. In Ohio, we got this photo of Davin with his Dad, Bill and Step-Mom, Lou and the kids.  6. The kids relaxing in Bill and Lou's hot tub. We didn't have a lot of down time on the trip, so this was really nice!  7. We were so bored on the road that Maya filled her Croc with colored pencils.  8. I knitted a scarf for my dad's 60th birthday while we were travelling. You can see me explaining it to him here. You don't normally have to explain a scarf, but I'd made this one with a stripe pattern based on the Fibonacci Sequence. Yeah, we're all nerds in my family.  9. Anthracite coal, isn't it shiny?  10. This is where the latch blew off of our pop up camper, causing it to begin to open while we were driving. Darn Kansas wind!  And, because you've been so good, I'll show you a series of self-portraits with me and my family members... 11. Me and my niece Amelia (Liam's sister). She took this one! We're HOME!!!!
Yesterday was a bit dicey, I resorted to offering the children money for various good behaviors (ie "bribing" them). It worked, and I only ended up paying out $5. Three kids got a dollar each for "not hitting anyone the rest of the way home," and two got a dollar for "falling asleep." Does that make me a bad person?
Anyway, we're digging out from the trip laundry and the mail, and we're going to do some grocery shopping and hopefully get a little more back to normal today. Well, normal for the horde...

Now I Get It!
Now I know why The Wizard of Oz was set in Kansas. Oh my goodness gracious but it's windy here! We're kind of afraid to leave the camper...we might be the only thing holding it down! We're about 300 miles from Denver, so we should be able to get home with no trouble tomorrow.
Hopefully the camper will still be in one piece. Today we suffered a near catastrophic failure. One of the latches that holds the pop up down while you're driving just completely tore off and blew away (sorry if we hit you, we didn't notice when it happened or we would have stopped to render aid.) The other latch gave up, and the camper started opening in the dastardly cross wind. Did I mention the wind?
Do you live in Kansas? If so, is it always like this?
Hmmm, to catch you up, since I posted last, we went on a tour of Steamtown National Historic Site in PA. This dovetailed nicely with our trip to the coal mine, since the anthracite coal mined there was a big part of the growth of the railway system. BTW-we now know the difference between anthracite and bituminous coal, do you?
We left PA, and in one day made it all the way to Richmond, IN (through most of PA and all of Ohio). We stayed at a cute little RV park there (Grandpa's Farm).
The next day, we drove through Indiana, Illinois and a lot of Missouri, stopping in Columbia. We visited their Bass Pro Shops, which was neat but much smaller than the one in Denver (yay Denver!) I believe that Missouri must be some Native American word meaning "Dang it's hot and humid here!" We were grossly unprepared for the 80+ degree heat (at 120% humidity, at least). People must have A/C there, or else they come from stronger stock than I do. I briefly considered dying, it must be cooler 6 feet underground, right?
Today we were only planning on making it as far as Salina, but we decided to press on to get to Hays. There was a campground listed there in our directory that sounded reasonable. Well, it wasn't. It was a parking lot in the bad part of town. I'm glad we still had plenty of time, we just turned around and headed back to the highway. Well, we stopped at a smellydirtybad gas station on the way. I'm sure there are better parts of Hays, KS, but they're not where we were.
Oh, and we almost went to Historic Fort Leavenworth. I got it into my head that we really needed to stop and see if they had a tour or something, and we jumped off the highway. Then we drove and drove and drove and drove, and finally stopped at (another) nasty gas station to ask directions. It turned out that we were still pretty far from the base, and that we'd have to present ID and fill out paperwork explaining what we were doing there before they'd let us in to see the museum. At that point it just didn't seem like a good idea anymore, and we turned back. Well, I don't think it EVER seemed like a good idea to Davin, but he was very kind about it.
There it is. If we don't get home tomorrow, it's because we blew away. The wind appears to be headed north, so you should start looking for us in Nebraska somewhere...

Workin' in a Coal Mine...
Or, at least we visited one! We all went up yesterday to tour the Lackawanna Coal Mine. After having visited the Argo Gold Mine up in Idaho Springs, CO, it was interesting to see how they were similar. But, they were really quite different, too, and not necessarily in ways I'd expected.. At the coal mine, our tour guide, Harold, had actually worked the mine in the pre-OSHA days. He was a teen then, and so he had a pretty unique viewpoint on the whole operation. So, if you're out in Lackawanna County, PA, I'd highly recommend stopping by!
We'll be in PA for another day, then we're going to start heading home. We haven't figured out the route yet, because we're kind ofliving in denial about the big drive ahead. We don't have any time left to visit people, so it will be 1700+ miles of driving, camping and getting up and driving some more. If you're praying people, please keep us in mind?
When I get home, I will post some of the pictures we've been taking. Next time, I'm going to bring the cord and post them as we go!

Moving Right Along (doog-a-doon)
Do you remember that song from the Muppets? Raise your hand if you do. We used to sing it in choir, along with The Rainbow Connection...
We're leaving in the morning to head to my dad's house in PA. We have a LOT of family there, so I'll be busy busy the whole time. I'll try to jump in when I can.
It looks like we'll have 10 hours of solid driving, and we're stopping off in Columbus to see Davin's step-brother along the way. So, you DEFINITELY won't be seeing me tomorrow!
Today we helped Davin's family decorate for Halloween. That may seem early to some, but we decorated before we left, so we were glad to get another chance to do a place up!
We've been staying in the camper all along the way. It's nice, because we don't have to invade anyone's house, and because it's consistent for us each night. It's working out well!

Hi-O from Ohio!
Hey, everyone! We're here in the Greater Dayton area, visiting with Davin's family now.
Today, we went down to the Wegerzyn Gardens, which is so cool that it completely kicks the butt of the Denver Botanic Gardens. Plus, it's free!
Oops, I missed the dinner call. I'd better run. Oh, and we're doing laundry...why is there never enough money and always too much laundry?

Moving On
This will be my last post from Iowa, tomorrow we're leaving for Ohio. If you see us passing through, say howdy!
Today we drove on a HUGE bridge across the Mississipi into Nauvoo, Illinois. It's a really neat place, with some pretty important history for the LDS church. We saw the temple, and some of the residences, but we didn't have time to really poke around. We'll have to come back when we have a whole day to check it all out.
The camper is still doing well. It's been raining for a full 24 hours almost now, and we're dry inside! I am loving this whole pop up situation!
How are you all doing? Hopefully I'll be able to check in tomorrow or the next day!

Midwest-y!
We're still alive, and we're here in the Midwest. We're in Iowa, to be precise, so if you see a minivan pulling a camper, and the woman driving seems kind of tense, stuff us and say hi!
We've been having a good time driving, we stopped in a neat cemetery in Julesberg on our way to I-80. It was very nice.
We stayed in Lincoln, Nebraska the first night, and played in the campground pool. We were there at the same time the guy was doing the maintenance, so he showed the kids all the chemicals. They loved it!
I'll try to update while we're out. I can't post pictures, because I don't have any way to get them off the camera, so you'll see them when we're back. I should probably take some, huh?
